Obituary

Mildred L. Jones, retired St. John postmaster, passed away December 19, 2015 at the Avalon Care Center in Pullman. She was 86. Mildred was born August 1, 1929 on a farm near St. John. She was the youngest of seven children born to John and Katie (Bafus) Luft. She grew up near Endicott and graduated from the Endicott High School. It's likely that she met her future husband, Robert "Bob" Jones, while attending a baseball game in Endicott. They married October 8, 1949 in Grangeville, Idaho and made their home on a farm between Endicott and St. John. Mildred helped out around the Lancaster Store that was run by her in-laws. She had a fondness for the post office that was part of the store. She also helped with the farm chores, drove truck and prepared big meals for the crew. Raising four children kept her busy and active too. Later Mildred became the Postmaster of the St. John Post Office. She retired after 25 years of service there. Mildred loved to follow Bob around to all of his baseball activities. She became known as the official "scorekeeper". She also maintained a large garden and flower beds. She was especially fond of Christmas cactus. Mildred drove school bus briefly as a fill-in, she made several trips to Elko on the "Fun Bus" and she liked to watch old westerns or listen to old style country music. She also attended the Assembly of God Church in younger days. Bob passed away May 11, 2007. Mildred is survived by four children; Kathy Jones of Hayden, ID., Barbara & Ron Rollins of Conyers, GA., Tari & Randy McMullen of Pullman, and Gerry Jones of St. John; grandchildren, Jeff Rollins, Josh Leinweber, Tasha Walker, Nicole Jones and Jeremy Jones; three step-grandchildren, Brandon McMullen, Arron McMullen and Michelle Means and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition of her husband, she was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 1 sister. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the St. John EMT's or to a charity of donor's choice.
