Obituary

Murrell Abner Eggers, of Pullman, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 due to the infirmities of old age, he was 94. He was born in Watauga, TN on April 22, 1919 to Thomas and Ruah Eggers.

Murrell enlisted in the Air Force in 1940 and was stationed at Hickam Field during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He then entered flight training but saw no further action.

Murrell married Betty Jo Gibson on October 19, 1946 in Johnson City, TN. They began their life together raising tobacco and mules until their farm was flooded by a Tennessee Valley Authority project. Search for work took them to San Diego, CA where he worked for Automated Retailers of America (ARA) providing vending services at General Dynamics. Murrell moved his family to Pullman in the summer of 1964 where he was transferred by ARA. ARA was hired to establish the vending service at WSU. He managed the transition from student run concessions to vending machine services. When WSU Dining Services took over the vending services, Murrell stayed on as manager until his retirement in 1980.

Murrell and Jo moved from Pullman to a small ranch in Palouse in 1974 where they lived for 30 years until Jo's death. They raised a few head of cattle, put up hay for the cows and horses, planted a huge garden and made the "Ranch" the family's gathering place. Murrell also enjoyed elk hunting with his brother, salmon fishing in Alaska with his son, and trail-riding with Jo.

Murrell and Jo were founding members of Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church. The early members establish the church first on Military Hill. They were active in the church and lovingly contributed their time and energy to completing the interior spaces of the present building on Pioneer Hill.

Murrell is survived by his children, Doug & Cecelia Eggers of Juneau, AK; Amanda & Don Fowler of Garberville, CA; Debby & Dale Lawson of Pullman; Marcha Dillon of Spokane; and his brother, Dawes Eggers of Johnson City, TN. He was blessed with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with number seven due in December.

He was preceded in death by Jo his wife of 57 years, sister Wanda Eggers, brothers Cecil James (CJ) and Eugene, and grandson Matt Dillon.

A family grave-side service at the Pullman Cemetery is being planned for a later date.
