IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nicholas L
Henning
July 9, 1946 – November 17, 2024
Nicholas (Nick) L. Henning, 78, lifelong Sunset and St. John area farmer, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2024 in Pullman, Washington. Nick was born to James T. (Joe) and Florence Hayes Henning on July 9, 1946 in Colfax, Washington. He grew up on the family farm in Sunset with his younger sister, Vicki. From a very young age, Nick helped his dad with all things farming. He participated in football and basketball while attending St. John High School. He was also very active in FFA and was a Representative at the National Conference. Nick graduated from St. John High School in 1964. He attended Central Washington State College where he met Sue Stott from Seattle. They married on July 8, 1966.
Nick and Sue made their home in St. John where he worked for area farmers for many years while continuing to work the family farm in Sunset. He enjoyed having his grandsons help on the farm. Due to health reasons, he retired from farming in 2012.
Some of Nick's favorite activities (besides farming) included horseback riding, camping, boating, golfing, watching Gonzaga basketball and spending time with his family. In later years, he and Sue enjoyed golfing in Canada, many trips to Puerto Vallarta, and cruises, especially the one through the Panama Canal.
Nick was proud to call St. John home. He enjoyed volunteering around the community whenever he could. He was always quick to offer a hand and his equipment when needed. Nick was a 50+ year member of the Wheatland Grange. Over the years, he belonged to the St. John Saddle Club, St. John Gun Club and the St. John Golf Club. One of Nick's proudest accomplishments was serving on the St. John School Board and assisting with the formation of the St. John-Endicott Co-Op. Nick was a member of Class 10 (1987-1989) of the Washington Ag Forestry Leadership Program. He also served on the Barley Commission for two years.
Nick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sue Henning, now of Pullman; his daughters, Dana Crider of Spokane and Lisa Williams (Richard White) of Steptoe; grandsons, Justin (Raven) Williams, Cole (Paige) Crider and Cale Crider; great-grandchildren, Braxton, Kam, Adlee, and Payson; and brother-in-law Rod Gehring. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Vicki and great-grandson Jace Williams.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the St. John Methodist Church. A potluck luncheon will follow the service. The family suggests memorials gifts be made to the St. John Community Club (Kitchen Fund), PO Box 1 in St. John, the St. John Volunteer EMS and Fire, or to your choice.
