Patricia M. Magaret Hatley, 82, of Pullman, WA passed away August 27, 2026 at her Pullman home. Patricia was born January 8, 1944 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Frank & Elizabeth (Barrows) Maixner, one of four children. She grew up in Seward, Nebraska, where she attended school until graduating from high school. Pat was active in Pep Club, Y-Teens and Future Homemakers of America. She played organ at church, was a member of the Triple Triad vocal group and Silhouettes Honor Choir, and for a while played clarinet in the band. She had a special love for music. 4H was influential in her live, even though she had been sewing all her life. Following high school graduation, Pat attended the University of Nebraska where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and met David Magaret. Pat was studying Medical Technology and David was a pre-med student. They later moved to the University of Nebraska Medical School campus in Omaha, NE, where David attended medical school. Pat finished her studies in Omaha, graduating in 1966, and stayed on as a med tech at the med school, teaching hematology to the new students. David and Pat married on December 27, 1966. While he was in the Navy, they moved to Bremerton, WA, and they later moved to Bainbridge Island, where they made their first home. She worked as a med tech at Northgate Hospital in Seattle for a time, until their first son Craig was born, followed a year later by Nathan. It was during this time that Pat began focusing her time on raising her family. In 1975, the family moved to Pullman, WA where Pat has made her home since. She helped in the boys’ classrooms and was active in the PTA. Pat and David would later divorce. She continued to raise her family, and in the early 1990’s became interested in quilting and started making quilts. Her friend Donna Slusser became her business partner, and they developed a technique of quilt design that they called Watercolor Quilts. A publishing company asked them to write a book about the new technique and, following much thought and prayer, they wrote “Watercolor Quilts”, which was released in 1993. Three more books followed: “Watercolor Inspirations”, “Round Robin Quilts” and “Shadow Quilts.” Through the years Pat belonged to several quilting clubs. She was a devoted member of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman for many years. Pat was involved in various aspects of church life that included singing in the church choir for many years and serving as a deacon. She also was a member of the Pullman area Hospice Choir, and a long-time member of the Chapter S of PEO. She loved and regularly attended WSU basketball games. In the summer of 2022, Pat married her soulmate Dennis Hatley and they so enjoyed their time together, especially trips to Hawaii and the Oregon coast. She treasured all of their many walks together. Through the years they supported Habitat for Humanity and other charities. In Pat’s words, “A huge thanks to Dennis’s family and friends -- They accepted me and made me feel comfortable from the very beginning. And to all the rest of you -- When you get up to my new location, stop by and we can catch up.” She is survived by her husband Dennis at their Pullman home; her two sons Craig (Amalia) Magaret of Seattle, WA; Nathan (Lauren) Magaret of Hood River, OR; two brothers Bob & Dick Maixner; and her four grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her daughter Anna in 1998 and her brother Stephen. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 11 AM at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, 525 NE Campus St., Pullman, WA.
