PHILIP BRODERICK COWAN, 84, formerly of Vancouver, WA and recently of Pullman, WA passed away Oct. 1, 2014 at Pullman Regional Hospital in Pullman, WA. Philip was born July 15, 1930 in Cleveland, OH to Henry & Margaret Mary (Broderick) Cowan. He grew up in Cleveland and following graduation from high school attended John Carroll University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1953. Philip entered the US Navy serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1957. While in the Navy he met Patricia DeCrane and the couple were married on Feb. 25, 1956 in Charleston, South Carolina. They returned to Cleveland following Philip's discharge from the Navy where they made their home and he began his career as a chemical engineer with Harshaw Chemical Co., and later with Standard Oil of Ohio. In 1967 the family moved to Tacoma, WA where Philip worked for US Oil and Refining. He finished his career with Coastal Oil in Wichita Kanas. In 1999 following his retirement Philip and Patricia moved to Vancouver, WA.as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who treasured time with family. His faith was of utmost importance to him and Philip was a devoted communicant of the Catholic Church his entire life. He was always an active parishioner and served as Eucharistic Minister through the years. Philip lived his faith every day. He enjoyed fishing, shooting and storytelling. Philip always had his hot cup of coffee and read the comics every morning. Through his life Philip battled cancer three different times in dignified and courageous fashion, always trusting in God with his family by his side. He is survived by his three sons Mike Cowan of Pullman, WA; Mark Cowan of Sherwood, OR; Philip Cowan of Vancouver, WA; his three daughters Maureen Cowan of Vancouver, WA; Meg Cowan of Vancouver, WA; Catherine Cowan of Denver, CO and his 13 grandchildren. Philip was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years Patricia in 2009 and a son Robert Patrick Cowan in 1991. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 at 11 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Vancouver. Burial will follow at Mother Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
