Obituary

Richard Alan "Dick" Schu, lifelong Rosalia area farmer, passed away Friday, December 5, 2025 at his home. He was 81. Funeral Services will be Friday, December 19th, at 1:00 pm at the Rosalia Community Church. Burial will follow in the IOOF Evergreen Cemetery at Rosalia.

Richard was the second of four children born to Edward and Jean Warwick Schu. He was born March 6, 1944 in Spokane. He grew up on the farm just southeast of Rosalia and learned the values of honesty and hard work from an early age; ideals that he would carry with him throughout his life. Dick attended Rosalia High School where he played basketball and baseball. He graduated with the class of 1962. He attended North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene where he was taught the skills of being a diesel mechanic. Dick enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam era and served at China Beach in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief. Following his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to Rosalia and began working with his dad on the farm.

Richard married Nancy Lambert from Farmington on June 21, 1975. Her kids became his and their family settled into home life on the farm. His entire life revolved around working the land, fixing things, and sustaining the farm. He loved being out in the field more than anywhere else in the world. The family did manage to take one trip to Disneyland in 1989. Dick liked race cars and occasionally would take the kids to the track to watch the races. Dick bowled for a while on league at the Rose Bowl in Rosalia. He and Nancy were later divorced.

Dick found love again when he met Debra Willis in 2004 when he was helping her with some maintenance issues on her property. They travelled some and enjoyed each other's company over the years. They were united in marriage March 6, 2020. He followed the grandkids in their sports activities far more often than he did with his own kids. They also went to Texas and Southwestern Washington to visit her family but mostly he liked to be on the farm. His family, and especially the grandchildren, will remember him as a gentle, patient, and kind man and he will be greatly missed. Dick never retired from farming and always looked forward to helping around the farm however he could. Health issues in this past year had forced him to slow down a little bit.

He is survived by his wife, Debra, at their home; his children; Shelly (Daniel) Beach of Rosalia, David (Holly) Schu, Colfax, Del (Laura) Schu of Vancouver, Washington and Ryan (Jenna) Schu, Rosalia; her children, Chad (Lovell) Gatherer of San Antonio, Texas and Todd (Kallen) Gatherer of Camas, Washington; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Mary (Gary) Dominick of Tualatin, Oregon and his brother, Brad (Margo) Schu of Kirkwood, Missouri. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter Aurora, his brother Mike, and by his parents.
