Obituary

Sally June Ousley, 59, of Colfax, passed away suddenly at Sacred Heart in Spokane on May 2, 2015 of natural causes. A private family graveside service will be held in the Colfax Cemetery and a gathering for family and friends will be later this summer at Klemgard Park. Sally was born in Colfax February 3, 1956 to James and Wilma Ousley. She was raised on the family farm just past the fairgrounds along with her younger sister Martha. They showed sheep in the fair as part of 4-H and they liked riding their horse or driving in the jeep. Sally's dad died when she was 17 years old and a short time later the family moved into Colfax. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1974 and went on to Fort Wright College in Spokane where she completed her bachelor's degree in human services. She lived and worked briefly in Spokane before moving back to Colfax and beginning work at WSU. She married Leon Miksatko of Greenbush, Minnesota in Colfax. They moved to Greenbush where Sally made many friends easily. She and Leon divorced and Sally moved to Oregon in 1992. She worked in Tillamook as a newspaper reporter and photographer. Sally was later promoted to editor of the paper. She moved to Longview, Washington to be closer to her mom and sister and for the next seventeen years she continued her journalism career with the Longview Daily News. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Longview and was an active volunteer for the humane society of Cowlitz County. She also helped organize people to raise funds for Alzheimer's research with "Wilma's Walkers" in honor of her mother who is waging a battle against the disease. She loved to "play in the dirt" as she called it. She always had beautiful gardens and flower beds. Sally also liked to read and loved spending time with her dogs. Sally always felt the "tug" of the Palouse on her heart and longed for the feeling of home she got in Colfax. She enjoyed the atmosphere of small town life and she loved the various views of rolling hills, fields of grain, and wind swept grasses all around this area. She moved back to her beloved hometown in 2012 and at the time of her death she was employed as a journalist for the Whitman County Gazette. Sally is survived by her mother, Wilma, and her younger sister by 5 years, Martha Bridges both of Longview, Washington; close cousins Mary Ousley, Kirkland, WA, Nancy Ousley (and her wife Carla Anderson) of Seattle, and Nan Allen of Lynnwood; she also leaves behind a close "sister" friend in Susan Hopkins and her husband Dan of LaCrosse and their children, Toni Jo Batterton and Stacey Hopkins. Sally was preceded in death by her father in 1973 and by her grandparents John and Dora Ousley pioneers of the Kamiak area and Walt and Ida Ousley of Mockonema. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to further Alzheimer's research. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is in charge of the arrangements.
