Shirley L. Brannan of St. John, passed away September 21, 2024 at the Community Pride in St. John. She was 94. She was born June 15, 1930 at the family farm on Prune Orchard Road near Colfax to Henry and Matilda Schmick. She was the oldest in a family of five and grew up with three sisters and one brother. Shirley graduated from Colfax High School in 1948. At an early age she learned to cook and do dishes with her mother. Following high school, she attended Kinman Business School in Spokane where she completed a two-year course in bookkeeping and accounting. During this time, she worked for an advertising agency downtown and often traveled home on the weekends. She met her dads hired hand, Marvin Nafziger and they were married on June 24, 1955 in Colfax. They farmed in the Wilcox area at his family farm. Shirley enjoyed being a homemaker and mother to their two children; Randy and Carla. Marvin died during harvest in 1964. She moved back to the Prune Orchard family farm area where she met Gilbert A. (Speedy) Brannan and they married on August 16, 1970 then moved to St. John. Shirley did bookkeeping for their television and appliance repair shop, Speedy's Service and Sales, in St. John and her children both graduated from St. John high school. Mr. Brannan died in 1987. She enjoyed church activities, maintaining a beautiful yard and garden, baking and sewing. Shirley is survived by her daughter Carla (Bryan) Bezdicek; grandchildren, Tara (Dee) Lordan, Justin (Leslie) Taylor, Bryan Jr. (Leslee) Bezdicek and Tyler Bezdicek; great-grandchildren, Ruby, Rory, and Reid Lordan and Cody Taylor; by her sister, Faye (John) Lang, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, by a son Randall in 1983, and her sisters Lois Zimmermann and Joan Lyman, and brother Robert Schmick. A viewing for Shirley will be held on Thursday, October 10 from 9:00-4:00 PM at Corbeill Funeral Home in Colfax. Funeral services will be held at the Christian Life Assembly Church in St. John on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 12:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the St. John Fire Department or to the Christian Life Assembly Church. Corbeill Funeral Homes of Colfax is caring for the family.
