Obituary

Shirley Gay Griffin, of Colfax, WA, passed away February 17, surround by her remaining children at Whitman Community Hospital. She was 91 years old.

Shirley was born July 29, 1933, in Colfax, to Albert (Al) and Martha Vanos. She was the youngest of four children, which proceeded her in death Albert (Al Jr.) Vanos, Helen (Vanos) French, Stan Vanos.

In her early years, Shirley bussed tables at the Top Notch Cafe, which her father established. It was there that Shirley learned about a strong work ethic, having a welcoming and charming personality and the importance of service to others. In 1951 Shirley married Bill Griffin and moved to San Diego while Bill served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Returning to Colfax the couple went to work building a business (Bill's TV and Appliance) and growing a family. They had 5 children, but lost two infant sons Danny (1952) and Steven (1953). Shirley kept everyone fed and feeling welcome at their weekly excursions to Coeur d' Alene lake-family get togethers filled with food and laughter. Shirley was competitive and enjoyed friends and family bowling, golf, cards & fishing.

Shirley is survived by son Joe and his wife Gloria Griffin (Worley, ID); daughter Jan and her husband Gary Scott (Bend, OR) and Jill and her husband Glenn Myers (Colfax, WA). She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren, with many special nieces and nephews.

In later years, while her children were growing their families, Shirley stayed busy; she managed the Colfax Elk's Lodge, enjoying the many patrons & friends.
