Shirley Cloe Smick, long time St. John resident, passed away Friday morning, November 2, 2012 at the Whitman Hospital in Colfax. She was 86. A private family graveside service will be in the Maccabee Cemetery at Sprague. There will be a Celebration of Life Open House at the St. John Community Building on Thursday, November 8th from 2-4 pm. All are invited. Shirley was born May 27, 1926 in Sprague, Washington to Frank and Mary (Scheuss) Jones. She grew up in Sprague and graduated from high school there in 1944. Shirley attended Washington State College in Pullman and completed her four year degree in 1948. She taught school for a while in Battle Ground, Washington and also worked as a secretary for GE in the Tri-Cities. She married Harold Smick at Sprague, Washington June 23, 1957. He farmed in several places in Eastern Washington and Shirley kept busy as a wife and mother. They moved to St. John in 1966. Harold changed career paths and became a farm and ranch real estate broker, with clients all over Eastern Washington. Shirley loved playing cards and was a member of several bridge clubs. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed cooking. Harold passed away in 1995. Shirley is survived by her two children; Mary Ann (Ramon) Vance of Ventura, CA. and Jeff Smick of St. John; 2 grandchildren, Kurt Vance of St.John and Logan Vance of Ventura, CA as well as her sister-in-law, Sara Jones of Cheney, WA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a twin brother, Sherwood "Woody" Jones, two older sisters, Frances Actor and Mildred Merryman and by an infant sister, Thelma. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the St. John EMT's or the St. John Golf and Country Club.
