Shirley Ann Ulrey, 73, of Colfax died May 7, 2016 at her Colfax home surrounded by her family. Shirley was born Feb. 13, 1943 in McLean County, N. Dakota to Fredrick & Dorothy (Wagner) Helm. She grew up in North Dakota where she graduated from high school. Shirley married Larry Ulrey on March 8, 1962 and they moved to Illinois where they lived until moving to Colfax in 1970. Shirley was a loving homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother her entire life always putting her family first. She valued all the family events and gatherings through the years. Shirley worked for many years at Hamilton Drug in Colfax retiring following the closure of the store. She enjoyed ceramics, painting pottery, reading, working word search puzzles and had a special fondness for her flower garden. She also enjoyed time spent at the Colfax Elks Lodge. Shirley is survived by her three sons Daren, Les and Don; her brothers and sisters Jim Helm, Irene Fagan, Judy Schmidt, Gene Helm, Dena Ulat & Karen Beyers; six grandchildren Victoria, Halie, Jayce, Amber, Ryan & Brandie and three great grandchildren Aden, Issac & Aundrea. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Larry in 2009 and her parents. The funeral service was held at Bruning Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Burial followed at the Colfax Cemetery.
