Obituary

Susan Ann Druffel

June 9, 1940 – March 1, 2026

After a long fruitful journey on earth, Susan Ann Druffel bid farewell on March 1, 2026 in Salem, OR. Sue was born on June 9, 1940 in Colfax, Washington to Wanda Smith Druffel and Martin P. Druffel who lived on the family farm in Colton, Washington. Her mother purchased a home in 1946 unknown to Martin in Pullman so her daughters could attend the Pullman Public Schools.

She was a cheerleader both in Junior HS and at Pullman HS where she graduated in 1958. She attended Oregon State University and Washington State University. Sue began her employment career at WSU Data Processing Center where she assisted in development of a computerized registration process. Upon success of that development Sue then went to the University of New Mexico to assist in developing a similar system. Following her time at University of New Mexico, Sue worked at the Santa Clara Data Processing Center in San Jose, CA until she was given the opportunity to move back to the Northwest working for the State of Oregon Personnel Division. In 1980, Sue began working for the State of Oregon Rehabilitation Division as the Asst. Administrator of Human Resources until her retirement in 1999.

She will be remembered by many PHS students as the “Master of Organizing Class Reunions”. She organized 4 of her class reunions, 2 centennials and a reunion for all 1950 to 1959 in 2000 which was celebrated as the “Nifty Fifties” which included dancing at the Youth Center and a dance program made by Sue. For the Centennial reunion in 1992, Sue and her sister Midge Bashaw along with many volunteers developed a class roster for each class since 1892 which was produced in a hardbound memory book. The book included PHS trivia and board minutes recorded throughout the years and later became digitized by WSU Library for their collection.

Her family will remember her as being the “Scrapbook Queen” leaving behind thousands of pages of pictures and stories depicting their lives and those of their heritage. Survivors include sister Midge Druffel Bashaw of Pullman; son, Steve E. Swenson of Krugerville, TX; grandson, Tyler Vandehey, granddaughter, Courtney Swogger, Son-in-law, Adam Swogger, and great-grandchildren, Mia Swogger and Luke Swogger of Salem, OR. Preceded in death her parents, Martin and Wanda Druffel.

Private interment will be at Pullman City Cemetery Monday, March 9, 2026 at 1 PM. Corbeill Funeral Home of Pullman, WA has been entrusted with arrangements.
