Velma A. Hammond
Born on February 24, 1922 and died peacefully in her home on June 2, 2014. Velma or "Babe" as her friends and family called her was born in Burdett Alberta Canada to Albert and Katherine Schultz. The family moved to the Lacrosse area where Albert farmed. From there they moved to Onaway, ID where Babe grew up and went to school. She graduated from Potlatch High School and married Orlin L. Hammond of Moscow on October 31, 1942. They lived in Onaway where Babe had a beauty shop until Orlin went into the service. Babe followed Orlin to Texas for a couple of years and then returned to the Potlatch area. They then moved to Mica, WA to a dairy farm until they were flooded out and moved into a home in the hills above Liberty Lake. Finally they moved into the home where they would spend the rest of their lives, in the Spokane Valley, in 1957. She is survived by a son, Richard Hammond and wife Michele of Priest River, ID, daughter, Barbara Persons of Colfax, WA as well as four grandchildren: Don Broadfoot and wife Jamie of Puyallup, Jim Broadfoot and wife Kim of Wyoming, Heather Crabb and husband Jared of Spokane Valley and Robert Hammond and wife Amanda also of Spokane Valley. Also five great grandchildren: Gunnar Crabb, Sailor Crabb, Paitynn Hammond, Max Hammond and Levi Broadfoot. She was preceded in death by her husband Orlin in 2002 and grandson Jesse Persons in 1997. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 13th from 4:00-8:00pm at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S. Pines Road, Spokane Valley. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 14th at 11:00am at Thornhill Valley Chapel, followed by a graveside service at the Colfax Cemetery in Colfax, WA. at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Providence Visiting Nursing Association, (509) 536-6464 or to Hospice of Spokane, (509) 456-0438.
