Obituary

Verne S. Munn, Pullman resident, passed away February 14, 2017. No formal services are planned as per his request. Verne was born February 8, 1948 in Columbus, Indiana to John and Mary Ann (Teagarden) Munn. He grew up in Columbus where he developed a passion for trains and could often be found at the rail yards. Once he graduated from high school in Columbus, his Dad accepted an overseas assignment which allowed Verne to live in Hong Kong for a short while. He returned to the States in 1967 and found his way out to Spokane where he joined the U.S. Air Force at Fairchild Air Force Base. It was while here that he met the love of his life, Alice Lorraine Sackmann and they were married on April 3, 1970. Verne was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1973 and they moved to the farm where Alice grew up. While living there, their son Jason was born. The family moved to Davenport in 1976. It was in Davenport where Verne began to work for various agri-business companies. This eventually led Verne and his family to Colfax in 1981 and then Pullman in 1986. Verne grew weary of agri-businesses and decided to pursue opportunities at WSU where he started working at the Creamery in 1991. He eventually transferred to the steam plant at WSU where he eventually retired.

Verne's passion for trains never diminished and he also thoroughly enjoyed and took great pride in maintaining his own cars. Starting in the 1970's he also became enamored with watches and clocks; he truly enjoyed restoring and collecting them in his spare time. He also became passionate about reading, in particular history, business and science books. From the 1970's through the early 1990's, Verne even completed two bachelor degrees (University of Missouri and The University of the State of New York) via correspondence without ever setting foot on either campus! He always believed in being honest and virtuous and raised his son with those same beliefs. Verne is survived by his son, Jason (Jody) Munn of the Spokane Valley; 3 grandchildren, Emily, Branden and Matthew Munn all of Spokane Valley; and by his sister, Amy (Will) Davis of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, in 2006, by his sister, Susie, and by his parents. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Whitman County Humane Society. Kimball Funeral Home, Pullman, is in charge of the arrangements. www.kimballfh.com
