Obituary

Walfred H. "Wally" Peterson, 88, of Pullman died on August 10, 2013 at Bishop Place in Pullman. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Wally was born on December 28, 1924 at Moline, Illinois to Julius and Elsa (Tjernland) Peterson and grew up during the Great Depression in the Swedish immigrant community. He lost his left arm to gangrene as a child, a fact that, to his regret, kept him out of World War II. He earned his Bachelor's and Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Minnesota.

On September 13, 1947 he married Marianne Schouweiler in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The couple made their home in St. Paul for many years while Wally taught at Bethel College. After a brief sojourn in Washington, DC, the Petersons moved to Pullman in 1968 where Wally accepted a faculty position in the Political Science Department at Washington State University. He taught many different classes at WSU, ranging from small graduate seminars to large introductory courses. He wrote two books and numerous shorter pieces on civil liberties and church-state relations, his special areas of interest.

Wally was a long time ACLU member, a church person and a loyal Democrat. He was also active in the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He often quoted poetry he knew by heart, made model airplanes and launched small hot air balloons made of tissue paper. The summary to all of this, of course, is that Wally thoroughly enjoyed life.

Wally is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Marianne Peterson of Pullman; son Nils Peterson and wife Krista Kramer of Moscow; daughter Elsa Kirsten Peters of Pullman and granddaughter Karina Kramer of Moscow. Wally is also survived by his sister Helen Palmquist of Regina, Sask.

The family suggests memorial donations in Wally's name be made to the ACLU, Habitat for Humanity or the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. Wally's family would like to thank the staff of Bishop Place for the excellent care they gave him.
