Obituary

Warren Devere Smith was born on September 5, 1935, in rural Okanogan, Washington, the youngest of seven children born to Ward and Mabelle Smith. He spent his childhood on the family’s orchards in Yackson Canyon, later moving to Cashmere and Wenatchee, where the family raised apples. Warren treasured memories of growing up in the orchards, climbing trees, packing apples, and enjoying watermelon. His mother's award-winning apple pies also inspired a lifelong love that became a cherished Smith family tradition.

Warren attended school in Cashmere and Wenatchee and later Wenatchee Valley College. He enjoyed basketball, working on the yearbook, and his love of fast cars.

While working for Peter Kiewit on the Minute Man Missile silo construction project in North Dakota, Warren heard a lovely voice over the company dispatch. Determined to meet the woman behind it, he soon met Bonnie Jean Nordwall. They married on August 31, 1963 in Minot beginning a wonderful life together.

Their three daughters, Jeanette, Elizabeth, and Holly Jo, completed their family. After returning to Wenatchee in 1965, Warren helped his parents operate the family orchard. In 1971, he accepted an opportunity to develop and manage Wawawai Mobile Home Park along the Snake River. Warren took great pride in maintaining the property, planting trees, gardening, managing the store and gas station, and visiting with the many people who became part of their community.

After moving to Colfax in 1981, Warren worked at Steptoe School and later Action Auto Parts. He enjoyed caring for his home and yard and supporting his daughters’ activities.

Upon retiring in 1997, Warren discovered a passion for collecting marbles, leading to countless adventures with Bonnie throughout the Northwest and across the country. He also treasured time with his grandchildren, caring for the family pets, reading the newspaper, drinking coffee, watching the Atlanta Braves, and volunteering at the Thrifty Grandmothers' Shop.

Above all, Warren loved his family. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, devotion to Bonnie, love of marbles, wonderful stories, and the family traditions he helped create. His legacy will live on through the generations who loved him.

Warren passed away on November 1, 2026. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Bonnie; three daughters, Jeanette (Kent) Mackleit, Elizabeth (Terry) Huber, and Holly Jo Hiatt.

He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Bryan (April) Mackleit, Errin (Richard) Couck, Dustin (Jessica) Huber, Sidney (Eli) Driessen, Parker Huber, Bailey and Averi Mackleit, Holly and Cameron Hiatt; and his great-grandchildren: Zachary, Abigail, William, Ashton, Charles, Bud, Remi, Nora, Lane, Stryker and Myah. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ward and Mabelle Smith; sisters, Louise McCracken and Wardine Tatham; brothers, Bob, Bill, Dale, and Dwayne Smith; and son-in-law, Chanc Hiatt.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Onecho Bible Church, 11361 Almota Road, Colfax, Washington. A luncheon will follow.

Memorial donations may be made to Onecho Bible Church or The Thrifty Grandmothers' Shop in Colfax.

Warren's life was filled with family, friendships, hard work, and simple pleasures. His stories will continue to be shared, his traditions will live on, and there will always be room for one more slice of homemade apple pie.
